It is a beautiful movie. The themes and subthemes are sublime and are weaved beautifully. I was reluctant initially to go and see the movie ( you know ordinary viewes like me do get a little intimidated by such 'Cannes' type movies? - we are more comfortable with the 'khan' type movies - lol ) . It was pleasant to watch the movie and I must say the movie started growing on me, couple of hours after I left the theater. Without any effort, the theme surfaced up within me from the inside-out (as any good art-work should, i believe) and I was able to grasp some of the concepts and also the metaphors employed. More so since I must have perhaps myself probed upon the concepts of popular cinema, purpose of cinema, the sublimation process in art, the persuasion in art, the selling aspect of it etc etc. That Vishnu could manage to exchange water for oil (viewers should recall his father's cliched '…registaan mein paani nahi bech paaoge' ) was nicely handled although it carries the risk of coming across as something trivial and maybe it was. The oil motif was well employed throughout. Chacha's love and luck with ancient machines, his witty jibes on the naturally self-centered city-waala, Vishnu - was smooth and enjoyable. Satish kaushik carried the character superbly, I thought. Chacha’s optimism came through in a measured manner and he was aptly rewarded with a permanent smile in his death bed. The music could have been more local, I felt (but maybe the sound of local indian string instruments might not have created the space. Packaging does matter right?). The parting away of the young widow and Vishnu had something liberal and wishful about it but that image I thought is ambigously beautiful (for city-wallas like us?). The image of village commoners laughing out watching Chaplin is something that would surely remain with the viewers. nice work! a must-see for those who are passionate (or even dispassionate) about 'caneema' or 'cinema', for students of cinema, critics of the art...
